Shaolin Monastery or Shaolin Temple (Chinese: 少林寺; pinyin: Shàolín Sì; Wade–Giles: Shao-lin Szu, pronounced [ʂɑ̂ʊ̯lǐn sî]; Cantonese Yale: Siulàhm Jí) is a Chán Buddhist temple on Mount Song, near Dengfeng, Zhengzhou, Henan province, China. It is led by Abbot Shi Yongxin. Founded in the fifth century, the monastery is long famous for its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu and it is the best known Mahayana Buddhist monastery to the Western world. Shaolin Monastery and its famed Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the "Historic Monuments of Dengfeng."

The first Shaolin Monastery abbot was Batuo (also called Fotuo or Buddhabhadra, or also known as Bodhidharma) a dhyana master who came to China from India in 464 to spread Buddhist teachings.
According to the Continued Biographies of Eminent Monks (645) by Daoxuan, Shaolin Monastery was built on the north side of Shaoshi, the central peak of Mount Song, one of the Sacred Mountains of China, by Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty in 477. Yang Xuanzhi, in the Record of the Buddhist Monasteries of Luoyang (547), and Li Xian, in the Ming Yitongzhi (1461), concur with Daoxuan's location and attribution. The Jiaqing Chongxiu Yitongzhi (1843) specifies that this monastery, located in the province of Henan, was built in the 20th year of the Taihe era of the Northern Wei Dynasty, that is, the monastery was built in 495.
The Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty was a supporter of Shaolin Temple, and he wrote the calligraphic inscriptions that still hang over the Heavenly King Hall and the Buddha Hall today.

MULLAPERIYAR : THE WATER BOMB

Here we are bringing all your attention to Mullaperiyar Dam which threatens the lives of 3.5 million civilians spread across 4 districts of Kerala. Mullaperiyar is constructed over the headwaters of the Periyar River in 1887 -1895 (yes, a dam which is in use for 116 years), upon a lease indenture for 999 years. The dam was built of Surkhi Mortar, and the engineers had given it a life period of 50 years but now it’s the 116th year. Mullaperiyar Dam site lie in seismic zone-III as per the seismic zoning map of India. This area is close to a large number of major faults in this region, some of which are active and others having the potential to become active. Earthquakes of intensities around 5.0 in Richter scale were occurred in this region in the recent past. There have been 22 small earthquakes since January 2011, and within a span of 2 days, two tremors of mild intensity on 5/11/10 and 6/11/2010 occurred in the 50KM range of Mullaperiyar Dam. Even though, these earthquakes are minor in nature, these are seen as indication of the increased seismicity of the region surrounding Mullaperiyar Dam, which was once thought completely dormant. As per some experts’ reports, the dam can survive a maximum period of 5 more years (if no more seismic activities by God’s grace). But any kind of seismic activity with an intensity of more than 5.0 in Richter scale will end up in direct collapse of the dam, which will release a water bomb with 445 million cubic meter with a capacity to destroy everything on its way to the much bigger Idukki Dam with 2000 million cubic metres. As obvious, the Idukki Dam also will collapse and water will flood towards the Arabian Sea and everything on its way (4 districts – Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Aleppey and Ernakulam, with a total population of 3.5 million people) will be destroyed within an hour time..... The only way out is a new dam, but it is caught in the politics between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu was successful in arm twisting Kerala using its political power in centre and in the legal battle in Supreme Court. As per reports, Mullaperiyar is the second most dangerous and oldest reservoir in the world behind the Mosul Dam (Iraq)... Now the recent developments are making the people more panic; we the common people are embarrassed by the ignorance from the political field and the media. None other than the common public is even talking about this.... we are trying to raise this through protests and making more awareness; but no political parties or media is bothered about 3.5 million lives. Variety Recipe*: The Great Chicken Pickle

I am an explorer of food but i beleive that worthless people live only to eat and drink; people of worth eat and drink only to live.Here i am presenting before you a variety type of pickle my friend Amit created sorry invented in our room and tested and verified upon several guinea pigs including me.It was awesome if you have guts try it.    Ingredients

Chicken pieces – 1 cup Red chilli powder - ½ tsp Salt - to taste Oil - ½ cup Mustard seeds – 1 tsp Cumin seeds - ½ tsp Ginger, crushed – 1 tbsp Garlic, crushed – 1 tbsp Curry leaves, chopped – a few Pickle powder – 4 tbsp Turmeric powder - ½ tsp Vinegar – 1 cup Boiled water, cooled to room temperature – 1 cup Sugar – 1 tbsp Preparation  Cut the chicken into very small pieces. Mix them with red chilli powder and  salt and keep aside. Heat oil in a saucepan and fry the chicken pieces till they turn golden brown. Remove them from the pan and keep them aside. Splutter mustard and cumin seeds in the remaining oil. Add ginger, garlic and curry leaves and stir them well. Add pickle powder, turmeric powder, vinegar and water and continue stirring. Finally add chicken pieces, sugar and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil. Transfer the pickle to a clean jar after it cools.It tastes great with dosas, idllis and rotis, not to mention rice. And what more- unlike most other traditional pickles, it can be eaten right from the day it is prepared.

Vishu is a new year festival celebrated in the state of Kerala, India. This occasion signifies the Sun's transit to the zodiac - Mesha Raasi (first zodiac sign) as per Indian astrological calculations and astronomically represents the vernal equinox. "Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal". Therefore Vishu is more probably denoting one of the equinox days. Although Vishu (first of Medam) is the astrological new year day of Kerala, the official Malayalam new year falls on the first month of Chingam (August - September). However, 1st of Chingam has no significance either astrologically or astronomically. Chingam is the harvest season in Kerala and southern parts of coastal Karnataka.

The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani, which literally " the first thing to be seen on the Vishu day post waking up". The Vishukkani consist of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles like raw rice, fresh lemon, golden cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, the yellow flowers konna (Cassia fistula), and a holy text and coins, in a bell metal vessel called uruli in the puja room of the House. A lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed alongside. This arrangement is completed the previous night. On the day of Vishu, the custom is to wake up at dawn and go to the puja room with the eyes closed so that the Vishukkani is the first sight of the new season. Since the occasion marks the beginning of Malayalam New Year, it is also considered auspicious to read verses from Hindu Holy book Ramayanam after seeing the "Vishukkani". It is also believed that the page of the Ramayanam to which you open up will have a bearing on your life in the coming year. Devotees also throng the well-known temples like Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple, Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple to have a "Vishukkani Kazhcha" on the early hours of "Vishu" day.

"Vishu" is celebrated with much fanfare and vigour in all parts of Kerala.Bursting crackers is part and parcel of the celebration especially for children. Elders gift firecrackers to children and every child vie with each other to make a world of their own. People wear new clothes (Puthukodi) for the occasion and elders of the family distribute tokens of money, called Vishukkaineetam, to children, servants and tenants.

Vishu is also a day of feasting, wherein the edibles consist of roughly equal proportions of salty, sweet, sour and bitter items. Feast items include Veppampoorasam (a bitter preparation of neem) and Mampazhapachadi (a sour mango soup).

I had been hearing about Sukumara Kurup from the time my brain captures the real life and makes me understand what it is.He is one of the notorious wanted criminal in the Indian state of Kerala. He is accused in the murder of Chacko, a film representative, in the year 1984. Chacko was strangled to death and his body burnt inside a car. Sukumara Kurup allegedly committed the crime to fake his own death and claim an insurance amount of 800,000 (US$17,760) by killing Chacko who bore a resemblance with him. Soon after Sukumara Kurup is supposed to have fled abroad, while two of his co-accused were sentenced to life-term imprisonment. The Chacko murder case is one of the long standing cases in the judicial history of Kerala.

Every girl's desire who go in for an arranged marriage.............

The woods were lovely dark and deep. Walking slowly beside her, in the

damp mud road, was her husband whom she barely knew. He was very

relaxed, happily watching a group of kids playing at a distance.

Her "mehandi" was still dark and smelling fresh, reminding of the

excitements and tension 2 days back. "It can't work this way

mom...please stop this", she kept telling her mother till the last

moment, who wouldn't listen but carry on with beautifying her. She had

been crying all night and her make-up had to be patched up twice or

thrice to hide her awkwardly swollen face.

It was too late now. She had to get married "NOW" to the guy...The guy

whom she had seen once and talked thrice. The guy about whom she knew

nothing at all but for his name and work. Everything happened in a

hurry and everything was over before she could breathe again... here

was she with this guy, all alone in this hill station... how can

anybody send their daughter such a long distance with a stranger???

Bright colored balloons dotted the sky. Children were jumping in joy

and he seemed to be completely absorbed into it...colors are always

exciting...but not now. She was not with her friends, not with her team

mates, not even with her parents. This was not a 3 day tour or team

building trip. This was her life and she has been forced to start off

with this person.

Loneliness and discomfort with this stranger was sickening...She

looked at him in wonder... does he even realize that he has married

me? Does he understand that he has to love me, protect me, care for me, a

new girl, a stranger, all his life?



The marriage morning started like a daylight nightmare for her. The

first time in life she felt she should have fallen in love and then

married somebody. Some man who she would have felt more comfortable

with, someone whom she could call by name and introduce to friends,

someone whom she could trust. But marriage morning was obviously not

the time to think all these.

Her parents would never have said "no" if she had declared that she

was in love. But she was not emotionally attached to anybody she

met, especially guys. She was very friendly, playing, teasing, but never

had second thought for any man around her. That brought the entire

responsibility of looking for a groom on her parents' shoulders. Her

parents had had a very bad time with this entire process. They started

their groom search with unending "&" operation. The concatenation of

"Horoscope matching" & "Decent family" & "Good looking" & "Good pay" &

"same cast" & so on... that always gave 0 output. Now after all that 8

months hunt, they were not ready to hear her "ifs" and "buts" for this

'good guy'.

She had explained to her father. She does not feel anything for this

person. He is nothing more to me than any other software

professional. Like list of names she sees in the chat rooms. Distant

and usual...Her father asked her to talk to him and even meet him and

discuss their likes and dislikes. That meeting started like the

induction programme self introduction and ended like a 3 hour

seminar. She was waiting to get away from that place." So did you talk

with him?"."yes"."was he polite and decent"."Yes"."Oh he got that

special flavored tri-color ice-cream...!!!".OK. All her family and

relatives discussed...She was given the chance to "understand her life

partner" and that they have understood each other "well" and she is

ready for the marriage now.

All arrangements geared up and it was 24 days after her first meeting

that she was getting married to her man... perfect match as everybody

else described. Marriage hall was full with excited people, kids got

the chance to play, ladies got the chance to wear the silk saree.The

smell of rose and jasmine filled the hall. Different poses for the

photographer and artificial smiles for the videos. The moment he had

tied the sacred thread was unexplainable vaccum in the head. It was

over. She was his wife. Accepted by the society and law. Her proud

parents were relaxed. This was their duty they had been planning to

fulfill since she was born. All this crowd will fade away, leaving her

to explore her new world...

He pulled her hand gently to sit on the stone bench. The bench was wet

and the chillness was indeed enjoyable." So what are you thinking

about?"... that was an unexpected ball. Should she reply? Should she be

silent? She remembered the two hour presentation she had taken last

month. Bold and confident, she kept answering all the queries with a

broad smile. Now she remained silent." Do you know honey... I was not

for this marriage too..." Oh my God... what did I hear??? Did HE tell

that or did I think aloud? What does he mean? Didnt he like me? Was he

forced into this? He must have noticed the quizzical look on my

face...with a gentle smile he continued..."I wanted to look for a girl

myself, buy her everything, care for her, argue with her, laugh and cry

with her, then get married to her... Anything otherwise would be a

drama. Traditional drama and I was not for it anytime. But my love for

my work and also my stress would not give me time and mind to search

that girl...When your parents talked to me 2 weeks before our

marriage, about your fear of getting married, to a stranger, I could

completely understand your mind. I could see myself in you and that

was the moment I decided I will marry you. There was no time to prove

myself to you, make you trust me, everything happened in a hurry. But

there was the entire life before me, to please you, to love you, to

make you trust me. This is no less than what I had dreamt, the girl i

was waiting for, is you. Now tell me... will you love me???" Tears came

down her cheek. Her parents had done more than their duty. They had

found her the perfect guy. Thank you Mom!!! Thank you Dad!!! His

question remained unanswered yet both knew the answer....

Tata Motors is taking giant strides and making history for itself. First the Landrover-Jaguar deal, then the world's cheapest car and now it is also set to introduce the car that runs on air, compressed air.With spiralling fuel prices it is about time we heard some breakthrough!India's largest automaker Tata Motors is set to start producing the world's first commercial air-powered vehicle.

 

The Air Car, developed by ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre for Luxembourg-based MDI, uses compressed air, as opposed to the gas-and-oxygen explosions of internal-combustion models, to push its engine's pistons. Some 6000 zero-emissions Air Cars are scheduled to hit Indian streets by August 2010.   The Air Car, called the MiniCAT could cost around Rs. 3,50,000 ($ 8177) in India and would have a range of around 300 km between refuels.The cost of a refill would be about Rs. 85 ($ 2).The MiniCAT which is a simple, light urban car, with a tubular chassis that is glued not welded and a body of fiberglass powered by compressed air. Microcontrollers are used in every device in the car, so one tiny radio transmitter sends instructions to the lights, indicators etc.There are no keys - just an access card which can be read by the car from your pocket. According to the designers, it costs less than 50 rupees per 100Km (about a tenth that of a petrol car). Its mileage is about double that of the most advanced electric car (200 to 300 km or 10 hours of driving), a factor which makes a perfect choice in cities where the 80% of motorists drive at less than 60Km. The car has a top speed of 105 kmph. Refilling the car will, once the market develops, take place at adapted petrol stations to administer compressed air. In two or three minutes, and at a cost of approximately 100 rupees, the car will be ready to go another 200-300 kilometers.As a viable alternative, the car carries a small compressor which can be connected to the mains (220V or 380V) and refill the tank in 3-4 hours. Due to the absence of combustion and, consequently, of residues, changing the oil (1 litre of vegetable oil) is necessary only every 50,000Km).The temperature of the clean air expelled by the exhaust pipe is between 0-15 degrees below zero, which makes it suitable for use by the internal air conditioning system with no need for gases or loss of power.

Drive carefully! Remember, it's not only a car that can be recalled by it's maker.
